It looks likely that we will go with typical Indian batting wickets for one-days. The crowd loves high scoring games. But I am sure they won't love it if India mostly loses those. What's the point in preparing batsmen friendly pitches? Our several previous defeats against Pak have been because of that. We do not play five genuine bowlers and on these types of pitches our bowlers haven't been able to control their middle order. Typically after first 10-15 overs are bowled by the main bowlers we bring the fifth bowler which is a combination of Sehwag, Tendulkar, Ganguly etc and those are usually taken for runs. It's only because of some crucial early wickets by Pathan/Balaji etc that did not happen in a couple of matches in Pak last year and we won the series. But unless we take some 4-5 wickets in the first few overs, it's always going to be a problem. If we have to bat them out, we will have to keep scoring in excess of 325 and it will still not be guaranteed.
291 in Kolkata was easily chased down. There was another factor of dew and lack of control on the ball because of that there. With all matches in this series being day games that may not be much of a factor now. In Karachi, they nearly chased 349. In Lahore in the last game, our main bowlers reduced them to 96/6 while chasing 291 and that made all the difference. But in general the only workable formula on these tracks seems to be bat first, make 325+ and take early wickets. Our batting is not in the best of the forms these days to get to those scores every now and then.
In comparison, if we have pitches supporting fast bowling, our batting is more likely to survive and score reasonably on those than theirs. Our bowlers also will be able to take advantage of that better than their seam bowlers and moreover, their bits and pieces bowlers like Afridi, Malik, Younis Khan etc will be pretty much ineffective on those wickets. In the last few games those have troubled our batsmen a lot.
If we end up chasing, the form of Dravid-Yuvraj-Kaif will be very crucial. It's them who have really won matches for India recently. Since most of the subcontinental games would be high scoring, there is no way the first 2-3 are going to take us there. In Pakistan last year and even in the last world cup, these three have made the difference for India while chasing.
