Imagine a mountain. Not a little hill but one about 12,000-15,000 feet high. Next, imagine that it isn't just any tall mountain but one that is a volcano. An active volcano at that. Now, imagine an explosion of the volcano. A blow up so intense that it eventually resulted in the collapse of the central part of the mountain and left an immense hole in the middle, a caldera: much like the top of a cone had been chopped off and gouged in. Imagine that for thousands of years since then, nature ran her course pouring cold rain and snow over this hot wound and that over time, the massive hole had filled with water. Water of such an intense hue of blue that, at first, it seems unreal.

Welcome to Crater Lake.

Crater Lake has no inlets or outlets. It is entirely fed by melting snow and emptied by evaporation. There are two projections from the blue surface - a large island called Wizard Island (not unlike Fanette Island in Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe) and a much smaller protrusion called Phantom Ship.

Tickets to a boat ride that takes visitors to Phantom Ship go fast so get there as early as you can if you want to ride on the boat. Another common way to see the lake is to take the 33 mile Rim Drive that circumscribes the caldera and offers many different and beautiful perspectives from each point. The Rim Drive is only open in the summer (late June to early October). Indeed, for much of the year Crater Lake remains inaccessible and blanketed under some of heaviest snowfall in the United States. The National Park Service's website is a great place to begin planning your visit.
