Highway 9 through the Santa Cruz mountains is a nice little typically-California winding road not far from home that's a pleasure to drive on. I must have been on it half a dozen times before I saw this very inconspicuous board for a 'Hakone Gardens'. A Google search revealed that it was a Japanese Garden in the middle of Saratoga.
Hakone Gardens is owned by the City of Saratoga. Spread over 18 acres, it has a little waterfall, a bridge over a pond full of Koi fish, Moso bamboo gardens and a Japanese-style wooden house built back in 1918 - entirely without nails.
Hakone Gardens is also available as a venue for picnics, weddings or corporate get-aways. A gift shop outside sells Japanese articles. Entrance is $7 per car. It's an excellent place to go to and relax for a couple of hours.
Hakone Gardens is located at
21000 Big Basin Way
Saratoga, CA 95070

If you like Japanese tea gardens, you should also consider going to the one inside the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
