Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen is one of California's lesser known National Parks. It does not attract as many vistors as Yosemite or even as many as King's Canyon and Sequoia but is still is a beautiful park, if a bit remote. The primary feature of the park is its volcanic geology and Lassen Peak is the remnant of an extinct volcano called Tehama. The last time Lassen peak blew its top was back in 1915 and it is safe to hike to the top now.

Bumpass Hell is the primary attraction within the park. It is a geothermal area which looks desolate except for the boardwalk that criss-crosses the area. It smells strongly of Sulphur and has boiling water pools of water and lots of steam. The sand is a very fine powder and almost white in color and the soil is colored red and brown. For some reason the sky looked a particularly deep blue and it was a beautiful place to be in.
