The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is far and away San Francisco's best known motif. The bridge completely overshadows the Bay Bridge in terms of popularity as judged by San Francisco memorabilia. It connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County. It was architected by Jospeh Strauss and is painted a shade of orange called 'International Orange' which goes beautifully well with both blue skies and the white fog which commonly envelops it. On occasion it is possible to be at the very base of the bridge and not still not be able to see it due to the fog.

Golden Gate Park

In contrast to the Bridge, the Park is not on many tourists' list of places to go to which is a shame because the Park has some really beautiful places within it. The park includes museums, an arboretum, a open air music hall, the Japanese Tea Garden and a Windmill. In fact, Golden Gate Park deserves its own page.

The Palace of Legion of Honor

The Legion of Honor doubles up as a vast museum showcasing art and sculpture. It is located in the beautiful setting of Lincoln Park with a golf course overlooking the Golden Gate. The Thinker by Rodin sits in the courtyard of the Palace. The Palace is modeled after the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris and is dedicated to the memory of fallen California soldiers of World War I who perished in France.

Coit Tower

Coit Tower is on Telegraph Hill and provides a good vantage point from which to see the rest of the city. There's an elevator ride to the top of the tower with even better views. Coit Tower is also well known for the beautiful murals that adorn the walls inside. These murals depict Depression-era California. The tower was built in that era by Lillie Hitchcok Coit. Her detailed story is here

San Francisco. Once you've been there you too will leave your heart there. It is simply the most beautiful city in the United States. Cultured yet sassy, eclectic and innovative, the city by the bay personifies the best a city can be.
